Article Critique
NFSC 600: Research Methods
Skill Area: Nutrition Research
Assignment Title: Article Critique (Chi-square)
What I learned: In this assignment I learned to critically analyze a peer-reviewed nutrition research article by evaluating the key points of the study design and statistical analysis in the article, and then later presenting the information in seminar format.
Reflection to the assignment: After receiving this assignment focusing on the statistical method chi-square, I was terrified because of not only the complexity of the assignment, but being assigned an article with a statistical method I had never used before. In retrospect, I wouldn’t have picked any other article of analysis to critique. This assignment forced me to not only learn on my own, but allowed me for the first time to realize not all published articles are of the upmost quality. It is important as an individual in the nutrition field to critically analyze nutrition research because just because an article is published, it certainly doesn't mean components of the study design and analysis are necessarily accurate.
Relevance to the profession: Nutrition research is a critical component of the field of dietetics. New information and research is constantly being published with access for many to read. As professionals, we must critically analyze all research and focus not only on the strengths, but also on the weaknesses and limitations of many studies in order to properly be able to answer questions and advice clients on emerging trends, specifically in nutrition research.
