Assignment Title: Forks over Knives Critique

What I learned: In this assignment I learned to critically watch a documentary that examines an extremely controversial claim that many, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that affect humans can be controlled or reversed by rejecting a menu of animal based foods and processed foods. I learned to critically look at both sides of any nutrition related argument, and the evidence behind it. Further, this film exposed me to an in-depth look at research behind plant-based diets and potential disease reversal after adopting such a diet.

Reflection of the assignment: This documentary reveals the journey of two scientists’ careers and how they eventually came together to research plant-based diets in relation to disease risk. Diet is a controversial topic and this video made me consider the different factors that cause some not to take the correct cautions to prevent disease. I was astonished when former president of the ADA Connie Diekman stated, “when you eliminated animal proteins you eliminate nutrients that you need,” because as we know today the current 2010 dietary guidelines recommend dietary patterns such as the vegetarian diet. This film depicts how corrupt the government can be and further unveils what the benefits can be for some adopting a plant-based diet.

Reflection to the profession: I believe as dietitians the evidence surrounding diets with animal protein and diets without animal protein should both be presented to clients. As professionals, it is important to educate Americans about trending controversies and present the evidence for both sides of any dietary argument. It is very easy for Americans to listen to what they hear as guidelines from the government, listen to suggestions in the media and adopt them, not knowing any other alternative. Films such as “Forks Over Knives” can educate many people about alternative ways of eating.
