Research Project
NFSC 600: Research Methods
Skill Area: Nutrition Research
Assignment Title: Local Food Manuscript
What I learned: In this assignment I learned every component from start to finish of developing a research project including beginning with a research question, evaluating the literature, forming hypotheses, development a survey instrument, collecting data, imputing data, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and finally writing a manuscript.
Reflection to assignment: This assignment took place over the course of the semester and was a daunting task for day one. However, this assignment gave me insight into how difficult it is to conduct a research study and a taste of all of the elements that are combined in research. There is so much to consider when developing a research project, and this assignment gave me great practice before I was about to embark on my own Master’s research project. I was grateful to have the opportunity to go through the process in this course to gain some practical experience in research, in addition to data analysis and manuscript writing.
Relevance to the profession: Nutrition research is essential to advances in the field of nutrition, food science, nutrition epidemiology and dietetics. Disease prevention is becoming more important and central over the years in relation to health care reform, and continued research is the only way to provide up-to-date information to guide the general public concerning their diet. Past nutrition research has demonstrated the importance of food and dietary patterns and links to chronic disease. As professionals, we must continue to put research at the forefront in order to keep advancing as not only a profession, but as a society.
