Necrotizing fasciitis or "flesh- eating bacteria" is an infection caused by bacteria that can destroy skin, fat, and the tissue covering the muscles within a very short time. This condition is caused by many different types of bacteria that can enter a wound, such as a wound from a cut or insect bite. You can also get necrotizing fasciitis from a wound that comes into contact with ocean water or raw salt water fish, an intestinal surgery site, or a muscle strain or bruise.
