Assignment Title: Perceived benefits of following a vegetarian diet: A qualitative study of vegetarian college students

 What I learned: This assignment taught me how to conduct a qualitative research study, create an interview guide, properly interview participants, and code and identify themes from interview transcripts.

Reflection of the assignment: This assignment was a great introduction into qualitative research. There are so many components that are included in this research design. I didn’t realize how difficult it would be to conduct interviews with participants. Also, it was very fascinating to uncover common themes among the participants and connect the relationships among their opinions on vegetarianism.

 Reflection to the profession: This research found that health and the ethical treatment of animals were the main motivators for participants’ vegetarianism. There are a range of reasons people follow a vegetarian diet, such as all being activists, environmentalists, and health obsessed. It is important as dietitians to take into account individuals’ dietary patterns and the reasoning behind such choices. Further, for college students there are barriers to maintaining the diet. Educating clients of ways of easy cooking, different foods to include in the diet, and how to access there foods is important to eliminate barriers.
