The lesson "Food Labels-Applied" is the second component to our two-part lesson on food labels. In this lesson we took the concept of understanding a food label a step further and tested the students' ability to apply the knowledge that they gained from the first lesson. The first lesson was comprised of both a lecture portion explaining the food label components and a brief activity portion using a provided food label to answer questions in groups. The objective of this second lesson was to see how well the students' were able to apply the knowledge learned in lesson 1 by using the information to read and interpret specific food labels, analyze the portion size, calories, fat and ingredients, while then using the information to make decisions regarding healthy choices. This lesson used side-by-side product comparisons to test the students' ability to make healthy choices between two food options based on the information from the nutrition facts label. Examples of products included yogurt covered raisons/chocolate covered raisons, potato chips/baked chips, sun chips/veggie chips, and ranch dressing/casear dressing.
